PVE PD Special Olympics Torch Run

The PVE Police Department’s SPECIAL OLYMPICS Law Enforcement TORCH RUN will be on November 1 (TUESDAY) at 10 AM (in 11 days!). The Law Enforcement officers (PVE PD officers) will running with the Torch—all the rest of us will be supporting and cheering them on.

It is amazing to have your support and the support of the schools with this event.

PVHS (Dr. Trista Ramirez, Jama Maxfield and their team) has made a huge commitment:

1.                   When the Torch Run starts at Lunada Bay Elementary School at 10 AM:

·         PVHS will have some Cheer and Song team, as well as other student leaders, at Lunada Bay to help with the kick-off of the Torch Run. They are working with Mr. Rafael Bernal, Lunada Bay Elementary Principal, to help with that kick-off portion of the day.

2.                  Along Paseo Del Mar past the Epping Cliffs and PVHS around 10:10 – 10:30 AM

·         PVHS will have the rest of their Cheer and Song team, along with Ms. P and their Band/Drumline and other student leaders, lining Paseo Del Mar near school.  Some of the Special Education program students will also be there to cheer on the Torch runners. Students in PVHS gear and several Clubs will have posters and pom poms.

·         Jama is working with ASB and their clubs and they will make some posters. It’s going to be festive!

There are many ways for Parents, Students and the Community to SUPPORT this event:
1. Make signs and cheer on the torch runners—along the Torch Run route.
2. Buy T-Shirts ($25 each) to support Special Olympics, and wear the T-Shirts when they meet at Lunada Bay Elementary, run past PVHS, or at the end at Malaga Cove Neptune Fountain. It will be wonderful to see Students, Parents, community members wearing the T-shirts while they wave signs and cheer.

3. Help spread the word—to parents, companies, company owners whose parents live in our community, church groups, neighbors and other groups who are trying to do something good in Palos Verdes.

4. Reach out to families who have Special Education children—so they are aware of this wonderful event. If any families have had children participate in the official Special Olympics, we would love to be connected with them.

The official Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run ROUTE on TUESDAY, November 1 will:

1. Start at Lunada Bay Elementary School at 10 AM.

2. Go along Paseo Del Mar past the Epping Cliffs and Palos Verdes High School around 10:10 – 10:30 AM

3. At the end of Paseo Del Mar, it will go along Palos Verdes Drive West.

4. End at the Malaga Cove Neptune Fountain.

Cade Robertson (Point Vicente School 5th Grader,) will be in our old PVE Police “Car 54” along with another young student and mother. Sam (Samantha) Robertson has been spreading the word through many avenues, and she shared that info on the Zoom call. If we need to get another antique vehicle for any other Special Olympics students, please let me know ASAP. The cars will follow the police officers who will run with the Special Olympics Torch.

Alex Good, who always runs with the Officers for a block or two at the end of the run, will do the same this year (around 11 AM – 11:30 AM).

The People First Self Advocates group (Barbara Haney) is having member Karen Rouch speak at the end, at the Malaga Cove Fountain. Karen was on the TV series Life Goes On (1989-1993) and has been involved with Special Olympics.

Betsy Fujinaga (Peninsula High School) is looking into the possibility of PEN musicians and student leaders joining the end of the run at Malaga Cove Fountain. Betsy might have a couple of students from their Special Olympics Unified Track Meet—come and run a block or two with us—maybe at the end near the Police Station.

Nathan Levy and his team is connecting a lot of the Special Education / Adult Transition students and families—to see if students and parents can be at various locations.
